Setting Up the Comparison
Speed isn't the only metric that matters in logistics, but it's the one everyone asks about first. We looked at delivery timelines across metro-to-metro, metro-to-tier-2, and tier-2-to-tier-2 routes for all three carriers.
Here's what we found.
India Post
Average delivery time: 3–7 business days (metro-to-metro), 7–14 days (everywhere else)
India Post runs the world's largest postal network — 1.5 lakh post offices, covering every pin code in the country including places no private courier will go. That reach is unmatched.
But speed is a trade-off. The network prioritises coverage over velocity. Bulk mail and parcels move on fixed postal routes that don't optimise for time. Tracking events can be sparse, sometimes showing nothing for 3–4 days while the package moves through sorting centres.
Best for: Remote pin codes, low-value shipments, government documents, registered post.
Not ideal for: Time-sensitive shipments, fragile goods, or situations where you need real-time visibility.
Delhivery
Average delivery time: 2–4 business days (metro-to-metro), 4–7 days (tier-2 and beyond)
Delhivery built its network around e-commerce and it shows. The company invested heavily in sorting infrastructure, a tech stack, and a surface network that rivals air freight for cost-efficiency across medium distances.
Tracking is excellent — events update every few hours during active movement, and the statuses are granular (facility scans, vehicle departure, out-for-delivery with delivery window estimates in some cities).
Best for: E-commerce orders, D2C brands, anything going to tier-1 or tier-2 cities.
Not ideal for: Remote areas (they use India Post as a last-mile partner for many pin codes), extremely fragile items requiring white-glove handling.
Bluedart
Average delivery time: 1–2 business days (metro-to-metro), 2–4 days (tier-1 and major tier-2)
Bluedart is India's premium express courier. A DHL subsidiary, it runs a proprietary aircraft network alongside ground transport. For urgent, high-value shipments between major cities, nothing beats it on speed.
The premium comes at a price — Bluedart is 2–3x more expensive than Delhivery for comparable routes. But the tracking is exceptional: multiple scan events per day during transit, proactive SMS notifications, and a dedicated customer service line.
Best for: Time-critical shipments, high-value goods, B2B documents, corporate contracts.
Not ideal for: Budget-sensitive shipments, rural areas (limited pin code coverage compared to India Post or Delhivery).
