What Makes Speed Post Different
Speed Post is operated by India Post — the government's postal service — and is the only courier network in India that reaches every single pin code. Private couriers like Delhivery and Bluedart have strong coverage in urban and semi-urban India, but they rely on India Post for last-mile delivery in thousands of remote and rural pin codes.
This makes Speed Post uniquely important for:
- Deliveries to rural and remote areas where private couriers don't deliver
- Government-to-citizen document delivery (passports, Aadhaar, PAN cards)
- e-Commerce sellers needing pan-India coverage without a third-party aggregator
- Affordable express delivery for individuals
Speed Post Tracking Number Format
Speed Post tracking numbers follow the Universal Postal Union (UPU) format:
- Domestic: Two letters + 8 digits + "IN" (e.g., EE123456789IN)
- International: Two letters + 8 digits + two-letter country code
The first two letters indicate the service type:
- EE — Speed Post EMS (international)
- CP — Small Packet
- RX — Registered Packet
- EM — Express Mail (domestic)

"Item Bagged/Dispatched from Booking Office" — The parcel has left the origin post office.
"Item Received at Sorting Hub" — The parcel is at a major sorting centre, typically in a large city.
"Item Dispatched from Sorting Hub" — The parcel has left the hub and is en route to the destination area.

"Item Out for Delivery" — The postman has the parcel for today's delivery round.
"Item Delivered" — Delivered successfully. If you didn't receive it, the delivery office will have a record of who signed.

Delivery Timelines
| Route | Expected Time |
|---|---|
| Metro to same Metro | 1–2 business days |
| Metro to another Metro | 1–3 business days |
| Metro to Tier-2 city | 3–5 business days |
| Tier-2 to Tier-2 | 4–7 business days |
| Urban to Remote/Rural | 5–10 business days |
Note: These timelines apply to normal periods. During peak seasons (Diwali, exam results season, election campaigns) India Post handles significantly higher volumes, and delays of 2–5 additional days are common.
Filing a Complaint for Delayed Speed Post
Go to indiapost.gov.in Track and Trace and select Lodge Complaint
Enter your tracking number and select "Not Received" or "Delayed"
You'll receive a complaint number — keep it
India Post is required to respond within 30 days for domestic Speed Post
For high-value items, you can also visit your local post office in person — they can contact the destination delivery office directly, which often resolves issues faster than the online portal.
Insurance and Liability
Speed Post carries a default liability of up to ₹1,000 for lost or damaged domestic shipments. If your item is worth more, purchase Postal Life Insurance at the time of booking. The premium is small (typically ₹1–2 per ₹100 of declared value) and provides full coverage in case of loss.
International Speed Post (EMS) has a default liability governed by the Universal Postal Union treaty — typically SDR 30–130 depending on the destination country.
