What Makes Speed Post Different

Speed Post is operated by India Post — the government's postal service — and is the only courier network in India that reaches every single pin code. Private couriers like Delhivery and Bluedart have strong coverage in urban and semi-urban India, but they rely on India Post for last-mile delivery in thousands of remote and rural pin codes.

This makes Speed Post uniquely important for:

  • Deliveries to rural and remote areas where private couriers don't deliver
  • Government-to-citizen document delivery (passports, Aadhaar, PAN cards)
  • e-Commerce sellers needing pan-India coverage without a third-party aggregator
  • Affordable express delivery for individuals

Speed Post Tracking Number Format

Speed Post tracking numbers follow the Universal Postal Union (UPU) format:

  • Domestic: Two letters + 8 digits + "IN" (e.g., EE123456789IN)
  • International: Two letters + 8 digits + two-letter country code

The first two letters indicate the service type:

  • EE — Speed Post EMS (international)
  • CP — Small Packet
  • RX — Registered Packet
  • EM — Express Mail (domestic)

How to Track

Via TrackParcel: Enter your Speed Post number at trackparcel.in for live status fetched directly from India Post's tracking system.

Via India Post: Go to indiapost.gov.in and use the Track and Trace tool.

Via SMS: Send POST Track followed by your tracking number to 166 or 51969.

Speed Post Status Messages

"Item Booked" — The sender has deposited the parcel at a post office. This is the first scan event.

"Item Bagged/Dispatched from Booking Office" — The parcel has left the origin post office.

"Item Received at Sorting Hub" — The parcel is at a major sorting centre, typically in a large city.

"Item Dispatched from Sorting Hub" — The parcel has left the hub and is en route to the destination area.

"Item Arrived at Delivery Post Office" — The parcel is at the post office serving your area. Delivery is usually the next working day.

"Item Out for Delivery" — The postman has the parcel for today's delivery round.

"Item Delivered" — Delivered successfully. If you didn't receive it, the delivery office will have a record of who signed.

"Delivery Attempted — Addressee Not Available" — The postman came but couldn't deliver. They typically leave a notice card.

Delivery Timelines

RouteExpected Time
Metro to same Metro1–2 business days
Metro to another Metro1–3 business days
Metro to Tier-2 city3–5 business days
Tier-2 to Tier-24–7 business days
Urban to Remote/Rural5–10 business days

Note: These timelines apply to normal periods. During peak seasons (Diwali, exam results season, election campaigns) India Post handles significantly higher volumes, and delays of 2–5 additional days are common.

Filing a Complaint for Delayed Speed Post

1

Go to indiapost.gov.in Track and Trace and select Lodge Complaint

2

Enter your tracking number and select "Not Received" or "Delayed"

3

You'll receive a complaint number — keep it

4

India Post is required to respond within 30 days for domestic Speed Post

For high-value items, you can also visit your local post office in person — they can contact the destination delivery office directly, which often resolves issues faster than the online portal.

Insurance and Liability

Speed Post carries a default liability of up to ₹1,000 for lost or damaged domestic shipments. If your item is worth more, purchase Postal Life Insurance at the time of booking. The premium is small (typically ₹1–2 per ₹100 of declared value) and provides full coverage in case of loss.

International Speed Post (EMS) has a default liability governed by the Universal Postal Union treaty — typically SDR 30–130 depending on the destination country.
